What is change? change is one of the most constant elements in life. Change occurs in many forms and is experienced in different ways. Change in simple words is to make something different from what it is. We have seen borders change, weather patterns change, governments change, policies change and even constitutions change. Human minds, tastes and preferences, moods and emotions all change almost every other hour.
How do I manage change? Experiencing different forms of change from good and bad changes, I have taught myself to always find the positive in every situation. I also try to create a big picture of what I stand to gain or lose as a result of change, then I draw a plan of how I can use my strength to achieve my goals. I also think of how my weakness can be a shortcoming and I look to find partner with shared goals. The two most important things to me in life is God and my family, so I always pray to go for guidance and protection before I take actions, because my family is very important to me, I always find myself asking my parents for advice.
To begin, change can be positive and negative. I have experienced both side of the change coin. Currently, I’m going through a lot of change. I recently made the decision to move from Nigeria to the United State of America to pursue a Master of Science degree in Project Management. On arrival to the U.S.A, I have since been exposed to a difference in culture, weather, Government, food, work place ethics and conducts among others. It has not been easy without my family, friends and the type of food I have been accustomed to for 23 years of my life. But, the change is a positive one as I have been able to learn new things and experience new culture. Staying focus on the reason I moved here as helped me manage the change properly, such that whenever I am faced with a tough situation, I pray to God, I also try to keep in contact with my family and family so I stay that I am rooted to my root and I try to connect the challenges to my purpose in life and that has really been helpful in managing this big change.
However, some changes we experience have negative influence on our life. For model, In the Government of a country, change is regularly experience with power changing hand from one individual or party to another every 4 or 8 years, sometimes this individual comes with new policies that may change our standard of living positively or negatively. For example, back home in Nigeria we had one party rule the country for 16 years until 2015, when a new party was elected to power. This caused changes in all sector of the economy, that drove us into recession, causing major inflation in prices of things, this led to higher standard of living for my compatriots. Things became harder and unbearable, so I decided to manage the change and opt for change and leave the country and travel to the U.S.A for a better opportunity to learn and grow.
In conclusion, for an individual to continue to survive, endure, or continue to grow, change must be made and handled properly as it cannot be avoided. Changed can always be managed into a good thing if we implore a good strategy. Strategies such as admire the outcome, start by taking baby steps, enjoy the process, reward yourself, prepare for problems, appreciate the path, monitor your behaviour, request for feedback, revisit your plan regularly, use helpers, control your environment and map your success (The 10 Rules of Change by Stan Goldberg, 2000)
