The Weeknd is one of the most famous and successful singers and songwriters in the music industry.
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born on February 16th, 1990 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. His background is Ethiopian and he is the only child of Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye. His mother would work several jobs to support the family and would also take night school. His father abandoned the family years after Abel was born, leaving Abel’s grandmother to take care of him. During an interview where he was asked about his personal life and background in the early 2016s, Abel said that his father has a new family with kids.
Abel himself, was born leader. He’s always determined and won’t let anyone stand in his way when he is going for a goal. Abel has politely turned down lots interviews, because of his shyness and insecurities that troubled him in his career.
During his early life, Abel attended West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, but did not graduate from either due to him dropping out of school at age 17. His stage name is inspired by his high-school drop out, after he left one weekend and never came home. A few years after his school drop out and after he ran away from home, Abel met a producer Jeremy Rose and Jeremy produced Abel’s first 3 songs, “What You Need,” “Loft Music,” and “The Morning.” Later in the year, Abel uploaded the 3 songs on YouTube under the name “The Weeknd.” After that, he then became known and he got the attention of people all over the world and the attention of former Toronto singer, Drake.
Abel’s unbelievable music career started that very day. Later on, Abel joined Drake in many songs and joined Drake on his Take Care tour. He is friends with Drake and they have a strong brotherly-relationship.
Abel is currently signed to his own record, XO. He created soon after he released It either stands for hugs and kisses or the drugs ecstasy and oxycontin. Fans are not exactly sure, but it could be both. Other popular rappers like Belly, Nav, 88Glam, etc are also signed to XO, alongside Abel.
To this day, The Weeknd still continues to release songs and albums and is currently on his Starboy Legend of the Fall tour. His latest album released on March 30th, 2018 is called “My Dear Melancholy.” In early April 2018, he performed at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival alongside with Beyonce and Eminem. Throughout Abel’s career, he has won 2 grammy awards, 8 Billboard music awards, 2 American music awards, and 9 Juno awards.
He has collaborated with other popular artists such as Drake, Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Future, Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar and many more. His network is currently worth $92 million. With all his videos on YouTube combined, Abel has around the total of 652,088,647 views and 14 million subscribers.
Later in the future, Abel would be remembered for his music. He has inspired millions of people, including me. He is original and unique because his music and voice are different than others. Abel says his style of songs, such as, r&b, jazz and pop are inspired by many artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince and R. Kelly.
Abel’s songs were featured on many hit movie soundtracks. “Earned It,” the song that really blew Abel up, was featured in the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack. More of Abel’s songs and song collabs such as both of his hits “Pray For Me” and “Sidewalks,” both featuring Kendrick Lamar are apart of the Black Panther soundtrack.
