The CIPD Profession Map (Fig1) sets out what HR Professionals need to know, do and deliver at all stages in their careers. The map consists of two HR strategies (Insights, strategy and solutions and Leading HR), eight behaviours (Organisation design, organisation development, resourcing and talent planning, learning and development, performance and reward, employee engagement, employee relations, service delivery and information), ten professional areas (Decisive thinker, skilled influencer, personally credible, collaborative, driven to deliver, courage to challenge, role model, curious) and is spread over four bands of professional competence from band one to band four (band one being HR Advisor, to band four being HR Director).
The Profession Map can be used within organisations to assist in providing a clear insight to HR departmental mapping, development and benchmarking to ensure contributions are made to organisational success. This can also be used for individuals who are progressing within their HR career to map their progress, capture the knowledge required and behaviours expected to ensure a successful career, at all levels. It gives individuals a disciplined approach on what to expect from themselves at different transitions which is shown through the highlighted bands. The map is not only used for self-development but also to add value at all levels of your HR profession, it looks at both ways to enhance both current and future developments.
