Significance of This Project to Oman
The Sultanate of Oman, in particular the regions outside Muscat, has been experiencing a lot of pollution level just over the last past decades. Several numbers industries and industrial zones have been developed along the coastline with a huge load of wastes containing heavy metal ions streaming into the marine environment with severe impacts of the environment and human health. As a major operation zone, Sohar industrial port area (SIPA) possesses efficient environmental management systems and the efforts have been put to reduce the risk. But lack of sufficient
background data and proper investigations on pollution and in particular risk assessments on heavy metal removal led to a major concern in Sohar. Therefore, this study with the goal of applying nanomaterials (i.e. CNTs) aims to develop novel materials in IMCO, which could filter out the water contaminants. In order to do so, collaboration with MAJIS and Barka have been initiated to help with instrumentation to study the importance of evaluating the heavy metals concentration and their removal in SIP related project plants as case studies.
