Ionic compounds form as a result of ionic bonding which is the reactions between metals and non metals. During this reaction the metal atom loses electrons as they are transferred to the non-metal atom forming ions. This causes the metal atoms to become positive while the non metal ions become negative and between this two oppositely charged ions as strong electrostatic force occurs. Examples include:
sodium + chlorine ? sodium chloride
In this reaction the sodium and chloride atoms react in having a fuller outer shell of electrons for this to happen the sodium atom loses and electron as it is given to the chloride atom leaving sodium with one less shell but a fuller outer shell of electrons becoming positively charged and chloride atoms with the gained election completing its fuller outer shell of electrons leaving it negatively charged.
