In Stephen Crane’s short story, he is writing about a little boy and a puppy. It’s not what you think. This little boy finds, beats, and neglects this little puppy that he finds. He thinks that is is okay to beat this puppy. After the puppy has been there awhile, they start to love each other. Even though the puppy is still being abused, he still shows his love towards the little boy. Then, everything took a turn. This little boy and the dog live in a crappy apartment in the middle of the town. The place is very beat up. The father of the little boy is very violent and always drunk. The father takes out all of his anger on his family and wife. He’ll through and smash kitchen utensils, furniture, and now he is heading towards the puppy.
It was a pretty day in the summer in 1901. The sun was out, beating down on the kids that were playing outside. There was never a quiet moment. If it weren’t the kids, it was the traffic. About an hour passes and “the child” sees a little brown dog trotting down the sidewalk with a little rope hanging around it. The little brown dog walked over to the little boy and laid down on his feet.
