Historical, Cultural and contemporary factors
Spanish tiles, known as “Talavera” or “Mayólica” originated thousands of years ago and have been used as one of the main influences in my design. The Spanish had utilized ceramics for many years in the form of unglazed bricks, roofing tiles, mosaic, prices and so on, but it wasn’t until the Muslim invasion of 711 that ceramics began to be glazed and use as decorative pieces. Glazed tiles and tiles enamelled with metallic oxides were introduced with Islamic culture and were soon used as decoration and exported throughout the Mediterranean. They have since become a universally recognisable feature of the Mediterranean.
