BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Family is the basic unit of the society. Child first encounter the world through their family. Due to that, child acquire initial education and socialization from parents and other member of the family. The family is the foundation of child’s overall development such as psychological, emotional, moral, social and spiritual aspect. The home is the source of happiness of children and it is the place where they can feel belongingness and being loved but it is also the root of the problem.
Basically, family is either broken or intact. In a broken family, one is not structurally intact caused by divorce, separation, and death of one of parent at a younger age. As a result, all domains of child’s development can be negatively affected. According to The News International (2015), Slowed academic development is another common way that separation of the parents affects children. The emotional stress of a divorce alone can be enough to stunt your child’s academic progress, but the lifestyle changes and instability of a broken family can contribute to poor educational outcomes. With that said, these have been our motivation in conducting research about Academic performance of students’ belonging to a broken family.
According to The Sustainable Demographic Dividend (n.d.), the divorce rate in Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, Indonesia and Philippines at 10%-19% But in Kenya, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom, Columbia, Peru, Canada, United States, Australia and New Zealand are worse off with divorce rates higher than 20%. South Africa has the highest rate of divorce data at 58% and the lowest official rate is in South Korea, Chile and Saudi Arabia with 3%.
With all that given information, it is decent for us to expand our knowledge when it comes to the impact of broken family especially on student’s academic performance concerning global, national, and local. According to American Psychology Association (2015), Life in a single parent household — though common — can be quite stressful for the adult and the children. Barring from the said statements, it is also important for us to examine the impact of broken family among students’ academic performance of other countries. According to Nigerian Universities Research Topics (2015), Studies further confirm that children in one parent household not only do or perform poorly in school because they tend to lack self-control, but also become disruptive in the classrooms, instead of paying attention to what is being taught in class, they are busy disturbing others who are ready to learn. In addition, it is also reported that two years immediately after a mother’s marriage break up, the mother exercise less control over her children than she did before (Hetherington, Cox and Cos, 1982).
While students’ belonging to a broken family affects their academic performance worldwide, as researchers, we also need to give attention to the happening as regard to the academic performance of the students belonging to a broken family in our country of birth, Philippines.
