According to psychologist Angela Duckworth ‘grit’ is defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.” In her book Duckworth demonstrates how both perseverance and passion propel effort and that effort eventually leads to achievement. Duckworth began her research at the rigorous United States military academy at West Point where she discovered that grit was a great indicator as to whether a cadet would graduate or drop out. Every cadet that got accepted into the academy had the ability to graduate, but what was more important was their grit. She went on to consult many professionals in distinct fields and noticed a recurring motive – they were diligent and they knew exactly what it is that they wanted.
