A popular theory in social science says that children with educated professional parents have an advantage when compared to the children of low-income parents with lesser education. This type of bias, dependent upon “the have and have nots” mentality, determines a student success. Today, our school system still values discipline and a structured system. The current education system is teaching us outdated skills designed for the industrial era, while ignoring the modern era, a modern era that will dictate the career paths of students. With a grading scale of A (excellent), B (above average), C (average), D (below average), and F (failing). Take the SAT for example. The same test is given to countless different students, and yet the grade of this one test determines the path to all of those students. The truth is evident. People learn in different ways, and various groups respond differently to alternative learning environments. The truth, however, has yet to make a complete change in our education system. Which is exactly what we need; a complete change.
A change is needed like multicultural education. A system is needed in which teachers are not biased or discriminate, but instead are knowledgable and respectful to all ethnic and culture groups. Knowledge is what drives growth and serves as a pathway for life advances. Our education system plays a crucial role in shaping that pathway for social economic and political institutions. According to the textbook Social Science: An Introduction to Society, one’s learning environment can significantly affect educational outcomes. If a learning environment is crucial to one’s educational outcome, then sustaining multicultural teaching and a collaborative learning environment should be the responsibility of the teachers and educational institution. According to the National Association for Multicultural Education, “Students learning within a culturally diverse environment develop a positive self-image and better ways of thinking that ultimately develop their sense of self and value for society” (Roxas, 2018, para. 2). They are not completely responsible, but in some sense of the way how well children are educated during school does carve a pathway for opportunities. A case study conducted on multiculturalism and multicultural education says “Adopting and practicing multiculturalism and multi-language-based approaches at teacher-training institution is important for increasing the quality of teacher training”(Y?lmaz, 2016, p.2). A way to secure and increase the quality of teaching is by implementing multicultural teaching and training into our education system instead of the winner- killer competitiveness the American education system provides.
On that note, aside form multicultural education, collaborative learning is another complete educational change that is needed. Collaborative learning is a teaching and learning style that involves groups of students working together to complete tasks, solve problems, and create products. A study, Benefits of Collaborative Learning, published in the Procedia journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences, outlines some advantageous findings. Some of the findings that students gain from these methods include developing social skills, learning from different peers, building trust, gaining confidence, and overall more involvement in learning. “There is indication that potentially the skills that contribute to continued success can be developed through collaborative learning. In fact, research supports a clear relationship between active/collaborative learning and the development of skills that will support success post-graduation” (Sansivero, 2016, para. 3). What we learn in childhood we take into our adult life. These are skills best developed and learned in educational environments, the earlier the better. Lumping students together and teaching as if they are an individual has disabled students attune and not learn. In doing this, the student’s individual qualities, strengths, and the passions of students are being ignored. Our society has failed to use schools to support students’ strengths and passions, but instead has forced students to follow frivolous tasks ultimately aimed at training students to pass tests. Unfortunately, in today’s world there is not much collaborative learning in most education institutes. If students are obtaining an education on such an isolated level, where is the room for growth? How do you test your theories? How do you know if you are on the right or wrong track ? How do you connect with people?
Encouraging students to reach out to peers to solve problems and share knowledge and different perspectives leads to deeper learning and understanding far beyond the class room. Our current education system can use improvement, a change, involving multicultural education and collaborative learning. This would be a place where students with different texts, values, beliefs and perspectives can come together with other students and teachers to harness each individuals potential. Success as a country depends on the attention and effort devoted to the education of the younger generations, our youth. The more people equipped with these skills, the more harmonious society can become.
